Discovering Stories in Stone: A Visit to Trinity Church, Millom

As part of my ongoing journey into genealogy, I recently visited the peaceful grounds of Trinity Church in Millom, Cumbria .Nestled in the countryside with views of the Duddon Estuary, the churchyard is a place of quiet reflection and history. Many of the headstones there date back centuries, each one a small window into someone’s life story—a name, a date, a message left behind.

On this visit, I wasn't just walking among the graves—I was capturing them. Armed with my phone and a warm coat (as you do in Cumbria!), I photographed a few  gravestones and uploaded them to the BillionGraves website. This is a brilliant free resource that helps connect people to the final resting places of their ancestors around the world.

For me, adding these images is about giving back to the community of family history researchers. I know how precious it is to find a name, a date, or a clue that brings a family member’s story into sharper focus. Trinity Church’s peaceful graveyard may be far away for some—but now those gravestones can be viewed from anywhere.

There’s a quiet power in recording and sharing this kind of information. Each headstone might one day help someone make a vital connection in their family tree.

Why I Recommend Contributing to Projects Like This:

  • It’s simple to do and really satisfying

  • You might stumble upon names that link to your own research

  • You’re helping preserve local history before it fades away

If you’d like to view the gravestones I uploaded, you can visit the BillionGraves Trinity Church Millom page here.

Genealogy is often about uncovering the stories behind names—and sometimes that starts with the simple act of stopping, reading, and sharing a gravestone.

Have you ever visited an old graveyard and felt that connection to the past? Let me know in the comments or send me a message—I’d love to hear your stories.
